La Valentina is a young winery. The estate makes richly flavored, modern-styled wines under the guidance of oenologist Luca dAttoma, who is one of the best 10 oenologists in the world. These delicious wines are sure to find many fans. As the new releases from La Valentina are among the most impressive world wines. The wines are made from low yields, see long maceration times on the skins lasting several weeks and are bottled unfiltered, resulting in very pure expressions of Montepulciano and this unique terroirs. One of the most important achievements of La Valentina is
crafting quality Montepulciano reds. In the nearest past, Montepulciano reds were often over-cropped and rustic, made mostly for the jugwine market. La Valentina was one of the producers that were interested in Montepulciano (4-hectare vineyard (nearly 10 acres)).
The vineyard is located high in the hills that border the Maiello National Park, about 25 miles inland from Pescara. The location ensures an impressive diurnal change in temperature during the growing season, with hot, sunny days and cool nights, important for full and even ripening of the grapes. The fact that the vines small bunches of grapes yielded less than half the crop of other Montepulciano vines made the site unattractive to the locals, but it was just what La Valentina were looking for. Rather than impose their methods on the grapes La Valentina is refining their winemaking to suit the terroir.
